Seaboard Triumph Foods provides Prairie Fresh® Pork donation to the Food Bank of Siouxland
Sioux City, Iowa (April 20, 2020) – Seaboard Triumph Foods donated more than 36,800 servings of Prairie Fresh® pork to the Food Bank of Siouxland on Thursday, April 16 to support the fight against hunger. As a continued supporter of the Food Bank of Siouxland, Seaboard Triumph Foods has been the presenting sponsor of the Food Bank of Siouxland’s Empty Bowls event the last two years, donating $10,000 each year to the organization.
The recent donation was made following weeks of planning the distribution of the Prairie Fresh® product to the Food Bank of Siouxland. Although this was the first donation made to the food bank, it certainly won’t be the last. As a new processing plant, the availability of pork products for donation are expected to increase each year, giving Seaboard Triumph Foods the opportunity to continue serving the Food Bank of Siouxland.
In the month of March alone, the Food Bank of Siouxland distributed more than 380,000 pounds of food, a substantial increase largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is over 110,000 pounds more than the highest month’s distribution in the organization's history. The Food Bank of Siouxland distributes to 100 member agencies including food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, residential facilities and senior centers. It also is the home of the BackPack Program: Food for Kids, Mobile Pantry Program and Mobile School Pantry Program.
“We couldn’t be prouder to have an organization like the Food Bank of Siouxland in our community and for their continued efforts to make sure those struggling to get what they need from grocery stores or are food insecure have food on their tables. No one should go hungry, especially during these uncertain times,” says Tori O’Connell, communications specialist for Seaboard Triumph Foods. “It’s equally important that our employees have access to food during this time.”
Seaboard Triumph Foods provided Prairie Fresh® pork products to each of their employees as they left work for the weekend on Friday, April 17. Some of the many people continuing to work during the COVID-19 pandemic are essential workers in food supply who are ensuring there is a delivery of food to the grocery stores in our communities and our world, so no one goes without food to eat. Seaboard Triumph Foods employees are provided a robust leave policy and support plan in response to COVID-19 that includes up to two weeks of normal wages if affected by COVID-19, a weekly paid bonus, and increased health insurance coverage. Seaboard Triumph Foods employs more than 2,400 employees.
“With school closures, job disruptions and other unforeseen circumstances, many people will continue to turn to the food bank and our agency partners for much needed support. We encourage others to join us in feeding our communities by supporting the Food Bank of Siouxland. Any donation makes a difference,” stated Linda Scheid, executive director of the Food Bank of Siouxland.
